Fransız asıllı arkeolog ve siyaset adamı Simon Joseph Léon Emmanuel, Marquis de Laborde (1807-1869), 20 yaşındayken babasına eşlik ederek Güney Avrupa'nın hemen hemen tümünde ve Doğu'da seyahat edip üstün çizer yeteneğiyle buradaki birçok anıtın resmini çiziyor. Yolculuğunu Mısır ve Arabistan'da (1828) sürdürdükten sonra Avrupa'nın birçok ülkesinde uzun süreler kalarak yaşamı boyunca bir gezgin olarak yaşadı.
Roma'daki Fransız sefaretinde Chateaubriand'ın yanında sekreterlik yaparken, 1845 yılında, kendini tarihi ve edebi eser yazarlığına vermek için sekreterlik görevinden istifa ediyor, ancak Louvre Müzesindeki antik eserler sorumlusu görevinden vazgeçmiyor. Yayınladığı eserler arasında Arabistan'daki (1830) ve Anadolu'daki (1838-1862) gezilerinin vakayinamesinden başka bir de gravürün tarihine ilişkin bir çalışması bulunmakta. Paris şehrinin anıtları ve kütüphanelerine ilişkin iddialı eserler yazmaya kalkıştıysa da bunları tamamlayamadı. Zamanının bellibaşlı dergilerinde yazıları bulunmakta. İki ciltten oluşan bu önemli baskıda, bilgiler, yer tarifleri, ilk gezginlerin eskizleri (A. Thevet, Τ.Η. Arundel, J. Carrey, P. Babin, J. Spon, A.G. Guillet, V.M. Coronelli v.b.) ve daha önce yayınlanmamış malzeme burada ilk kez şehrin arkeolojik araştırmasında kaynak olarak kullanılmakta. Bu araştırma bugüne dek Atina'nın anıtlarına ilişkin en önemli çalışmalardan biri olma vasfına sahiptir.
Sözkonusu büyük boy eser, özellikle Anadolu'dan ve az sayıda Yakın Doğu'dan arkeolojik sit ve eser, görülmeye değer yerler, tarihî yerler, günlük yaşam görüntüleri ve insan tipleri gösteren 80 tane tablo içermektedir. Ch. Texier'nin "Anadolu Betimlemesi" başlıklı benzer yapıtıyla aynı sıralarda yayınlanan bu çarpıcı kitap, Anadolu'daki antik sitlerin zenginliğini gözler önüne sermekle, ileride bu yörelerde yapılacak arkeolojik araştırmalara karşı ilgiyi arttırmıştır.
